“We've come across a vast amount of supernatural entities since the founding of IRIS. From all across the Earth we've searched and contained thousands, but the one we are documenting today has been one of the most elusive.

Unit 78-304-J is an entity that eluded for years in the ruins of old Shenzhen. The city was hit particularly hard by the cataclysmic event, rendering the city and its surrounding suburbs into a twisted mess of concrete, glass, and re-bar. We had initially thought that any attempt to survey the area for research purposes would be useless, considering that for the longest time, our bio-scanners indicated little to no human life, which is paramount to learning about the old world, but just this past year, we struck gold. A small hold-out group of old world descendants was discovered by one of our surveillance drones hiding in the old remains of the Shenzen metro system. They were hostile towards the drone at first, as expected, but after several audio calls, we were finally able to send out a scout team to greet them.

Their settlement was much larger than we had anticipated. A small makeshift city was constructed by the group throughout the years after the event, and unlike many of the unidentified groups we've come across, they had not reverted back to simpler tribal instincts as generations progressed. Though one particular oddity stood out to our lead research professor, which was a large stone and straw effigy in the center of their underground city in the shape of a woman. When asked about the statue, the group leader told our scientist that it represented the goddess that haunted Shenzhen for years.

We interviewed the leader further, he stated that she was awakened at the climax of the event, haunting the dreams of the survivors. He claims she plagues the victim's mind with images of their death, making it the only thing they see when their eyes are closed. With this testimony, it confirms that the large swathes of spectral energy radiating out of Shenzhen was, indeed, the spirit. When asked of how we could locate the spirit, the leader became very stern. He stated that their society's priest had captured the spirit within a large quartz stone at the base of the effigy. When asked if we could take the stone, the leader's expression filled with fear. He stated, “Why the hell would you want to take it with you? The spirit within is the core of all that is evil. She lures you in within your dreams with her haunting melodies. It will haunt you whether you are awake, sleeping, or dead. It feels no remorse, it feels no pity, all it knows, is pain.”

After several days of sly convincing, the leader was given permission by the priests to give the stone to our researchers, but only under the condition that was they leave immediately. The exit testimony recalls that as our scout team was leaving the area, the townspeople stared at them, pale in the face, paralyzed with fear. The leader's final words to our researchers before departing was, “You have no idea what evil you have awakened.”

In conclusion, Unit 78-304-J has been in isolated containment for several weeks now, with no noticeable side-effects to our researchers. However, if any changes occur, please forward this document to Dr. Redding in Level 7A – Supernatural Experimentation for further instruction.
